The new Shoreline Management Plan (SMP) for the Isle of Wight coast is being prepared in 2008 and 2009. The full document will be posted on this website when the Plan is published.

The content of the SMP follows guidelines set out by Defra, the national government department responsible for flood and coastal erosion risk management.

Policy Units

The SMP will include a series of statements presenting the preferred policy and implications for individual locations (Policy Units). Previous SMPs developed ‘coastal process units' and ‘management units' (which are defined in the glossary) to describe recommended policies, but these will be replaced by ‘policy units' which may not match the original boundaries. Policy units are simply lengths of shoreline for which a separate shoreline management policy applies (see the page about the SMP). Three epochs (or periods of time) are defined in the SMP: 0-20, 20-50, and 50-100 years from the present.

Information on each policy unit will be presented in Chapter 5.
